The Fall shot season has finally arrived and eBay is awash with old glass - my favorite time of year! (We also have a special collection-liquidation-sale ongoing here at pre-pro: click here for details. ).
There were many notables falling under the hammer during the past couple of weeks. There was a rare "Ell-Ell" glass from San Francisco hidden among a collection of 50 old and modern junkers. The lot sold for $405! Then I would be remiss for not mentioning the rare label-under-glass "Red Top Rye", shown below.
The auction turned out to be a predictable slugging match conducted in the final 8 secs, with Roger Roy making off with his prize for a new official record of $661! The seller had no idea of what he had, noting that he would have been happy to have made the opening price of $19.99!
But his week's SOTW is a rare Old Kentucky Liquor Co. racoon glass. I've seen this glass only once before: it's in the database, a part of Kevin Wade's collection. We have little information about the original company, but anytime you see "Colorado" on a glass, you know you're looking at a valuable one.
The bidding started at $2.99 with comojo in the driver's seat, then caught the attention of nowcollecting, grtpyre and mimiski who took the price to $38.45. But ultimately it was the snipers who drove the price to an impressive $427 with mystery bidder lpbco in pole position. Right behind was Ralph Van Brocklin, who recently metamorphosed from thegenuineone (858) to thegenuineflask (8). What's that all about Ralph? Maybe next week you should try theonegenuineflask? !
Congratulations to the winner!
Note that some previous picks for "Shot of the Week" can be found in The Archives.
