Thomas (PCSF) suggests that the company was created in 1878 when Amandus Fenkhausen, who had prior experience as a liquor dealer in San Francisco, took on a partner in the form of Herman Braunschweiger. Their store was at 414 Front St. Braunschweiger learned the trade quickly and by 1882 became senior partner in a new business with Bumsted. Bumsted was bought out by 1885 and the firm continued as Braunschweiger & Co. The 1906 quake destroyed the company premises but Herman rebuilt and continued the business until retirement in 1913 Brand names used by this company include: "Bear Grass", "Bear Valley", "California Club", "Extra Pony", "Golden Chief", "Golden Cupid", "Golden Rule", "Golden Rule XXX Sour Mash Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey", "Oak Valley Distilling: Brunswick Extra Pony Pure Bourbon Whiskey", "Old Pioneer", and "Silver Wedding."
