The J H Mahoney Distillery
RD #432, 5 th District
Nelson County, KY

The distillery was located at a location variously reported as Howard Store (1892), Howard's Mill (1896) or Howardstown (1898): apparently it was on the Rolling Fork river near New Haven. Cecil (1999) cites a newspaper article saying that it was built by Fred Bray in 1831. James Mahoney operated it until 1888 and then his son, James H Mahoney, continued in partnership with Miles A Howard. Mahoney bought Howard out in 1895 and became supplier to an unknown company from Indiana.

Insurance underwriter records compiled in 1892 and updated 1896 suggest that the distillery was of frame construction and supplied a single warehouse. It was also frame-built, with a shingle roof, and located 66 ft east of the still. At that time, the records note that the distillery was being operated by J H Mahoney, late Mahoney & Howard.
