The origins of the distillery can be found in a History of the Leitersburg District, Washington Co., MD., by Herbert C Bell, 1898.

The distillery was located at Rock Forge dam, the site of a foundry that had been operated by Garver, Foltz & Co. In 1882 the owners moved to Hagerstown and the buildings were purchased and coverted to a distillery by Benjamin Shockey.

1905: The MD State Tax Commissioner reports that the taxable value of distilled spirits for this year was $400. The distillery was owned and operated by Benjamin Shockey.
