The Hannis Distillery

The Hannis distillery was built at Hannisville, which was orginally located beyond the Martinsberg city limits, Berkely Co., WV. It was built in 1868 alongside Tuscarora Creek.

A survey by Ernest Hexamer in 1880 (see http://www.philageohistory.org/rdic-images/view-image.cfm/HGSv16.1500-1501) showed that were two stills, one copper and heated by open flame, and another of wood heated by steam. There was one bonded warehouse, built in 1869.

Hexamer also surveyed the distillery in 1890 (see http://www.philageohistory.org/rdic-images/view-image.cfm/HGSv25.2412 and http://www.philageohistory.org/rdic-images/view-image.cfm/HGSv25.2410-2411) and found that another bonded warehouses had been added in 1881, and a free warehouse that had been remodeled in 1890. Both still were now heated by steam.
