James Carstairs was a part of the larger Liquor-dealing Carstairs family. In 1860 he was listed as a Grocer at 522 S Delaware Ave. By 1865 the description has changed to "Merchant" and in 1870 "Liquors". Throughout this time he was living in the family home (his Father's?) at 906 Pine St., along with Thomas (Wines, perhaps later Insurance), James, James Jr (Carstairs & McCall), Mary (widow of David), and Thomas Jauretche, who was partnered with Charles S Carstairs in Jauretche & Carstairs, "Com Merchants" at 202 & 204 S. Front.
