According to Thomas (WB), John Hey was working in the early years as a porter for the wholesale wine & liquor company, Kelly, Henderson & Gilchrist. In 1883, he set out on his own, in partnership with Henry J Grauerholz and Henry Faust.

The company fell victim to the 1906 quake but Grauerholz rebuilt a wholesale trade in 1907 and it continued until 1913.

The company used the brand names:
"Davy Crockett Pure Old Bourbon", and "New Century Bourbon."
