The F Chevalier Co. listed from 1872-1919. The Wilsons (p. 47) report that Fortune Chevalier arrived in San Francisco in 1852 at the age of 30 and worked several jobs before setting up a liquor store in 1857 in Placerville. He later worked for a wholesaler in Sacramento. The F. Chevalier Co. was born when Fortune partnered with his brother Albert and set up a wholesale business on Front Street. They bought an interest in the Castle Distillery in KY and by 1880 purchased the "Old Castle" brand outright. They went on to own vineyards and became a major presence on the West coast. Brand names used by this company include: "Castle", "Castle Whiskey", "Chevalier Ginger Brandy", "Hebe", "Old Emmet", and "Relief." Company name timeline: F Chevalier & Co.
