Auction Sales Data: Rarity and Values.

The goal of this Database is to provide collectors with hard data about the rarity and value of pre-pro glasses. Both can be derived from a knowledge of how frequently glasses appear at auction and their final sales price. Sales have been logged since August 2001, so the data pool is large and growing daily.

Rarity.
The rarity of glasses can be assessed from the frequency with which they appear for sale. About 20% of the glasses in the database have only appeared once during the past several years and hence are rare, perhaps even unique. Other glasses appear for sale on a weekly basis and hence can be termed "common". The table below shows how sales frequencies are translated into rarity indices; the designations will be fine-tuned with time and as the database grows in size.

You are also provided with a record of the number of times a particular glass has been logged into the database ( # logged ) so that you can make own determination of relative rarity.

Rarity Index	Sales Frequency -- at least:
Very Common	Once every 2 months
Common	Once every 6 months
Uncommon	Once every 2 years
Rare	Once every 4 years
Very Rare	Once every 4+ years
Only Example	Once during life of database.

Current Values and Sales Stats.
The glass summary pages provide running values based on the past year (current values) and the past 4 years.
- The "current value" is based on sales that occurred during the past year and hence are reflective of current trends in the hobby. However, current values are also to very susceptible to transient events such as the appearance of a new bidder or a glut of pre-pro glasses on the market. Thus, we've also provided a four-year sales analysis to place current sales data in a historical context.
  
  About 20% of the glasses in the database have appeared for sale only once, perhaps several years ago. In such cases, the stated "current value" is based on this single sale and should be regarded as being unreliable.
- There several instances in which a glass may appear at auction but not yield a final hammer price that could legitimately be used in sales analyses. These include:
  - An auction that closes with no bidders.
  - An auction that closes with a bidder but does not meet its reserve
  - An auction involving two or more glasses
  - An auction that is closed early by the seller.
  - An auction that disappears from the auction site and that leaves no trace other than a photograph captured at time of listing.
  Such auctions are logged into the database for research purposes and contribute to the total number of times the glass has listed, as indicated in parentheses in the "# sold (listed)" line.
- The sales stats include "High Sell" and "Low Sell" prices. These are actual sales maxima and minima for the relevant time period.
