The Old Taylor Distillery
RD #53, 7 th District
Woodford County, KY

The history of this distillery comes from the Coyte papers, cited in OASG (1988).

1819: The distillery was built in Glenn's Creek, about 7 miles SE of Frankfort. It was established by J Swigert Taylor.

1850-1884: Taylor's nephew, E H Taylor Jr., managed the plant. Taylor managed two distilleries of his own and served as executor to the Old Oscar Pepper estate.

1885: Taylor purchased the distillery and operated it as E H Taylor, Jr. & Sons Co. It produced the Old Taylor brand.

1892: Insurance underwriter records suggest that the distillery was stone and frame construction. The property included a cattle shed 450 ft north of the still and five bonded warehouses:
Warehouse A -- stone with a metal or slate roof, located 103 ft NE of the still.
Warehouse B -- stone with a metal or slate roof, located 100 ft east of the still.
Warehouse C -- stone with a metal or slate roof, located 150 ft NE of the still and adjoining "A".
Warehouse D -- iron-clad with a metal or slate roof, located 225 ft NE of the still.
Warehouse E -- iron-clad with a metal or slate roof, located 225 ft NE of the still and adjoining D.

At that time, it was being operated by John W Johnston, Trustee, for E H Taylor, Jr. & Sons Ins.

1918: Prohibition caused the distillery to close but bottling continued until 1924. It was absorbed by American Medical Spirits, and later sold to National Distillers.
