C H Ritter & Co. listed from 1882-1916.

This is a highly unusual glass.

It's obviously the work of George Truog, etcher and owner of the Maryland Glass Etching Works of Cumberland, MD.

The label is black, but it's not certain that it was designed to be that way. It's possible that it was an experimental label: most glasses from this era were white frosted, and the company may have been looking to create a black version.

A second and perhaps more likely possibility is that it is a proof glass. White-frosted labels were created using a design template that transferred adhesive to the glass and then a vitreous material was dusted on and the glass fired. This glass looks like the adhesive was applied and then it was dusted with black ink or powder, perhaps to see how the etched design looked when applied to the glass?

Ritter was previously part of Chamberlain & Co. A letterhead dated 1915 notes that they were established in 1882, incorporated 1907.

Brand names used by this company include: "Caravan", "Silver", "The Westminster", and "Westminster."
