Joseph Loris' great-great-grand-daughter relates that "His original name was Joseph Loria but on the immigration papers it looked like an "s", so he became Loris! He had a hotel/saloon in Montauk first, with his brother, Frank, one frequented by Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. Then bought land in East Hampton and had the hotel built.

My grandmother, his grand-daughter, remembers being a little girl and Lucky Luciano coming in (as rumors were, Joseph did a little bootlegging for the mafia) and her mother telling them to "leave the guns outside".
"
