"Successor to C W Webster" (1891).

Many, Blanc and Co were liquor and tobacco importers and distributors. In 1908, Sidney G Many was President, Fred. L Koehn Secretary.

In 1918, they acquired The Shrine Cigar Co. and began selling tobacco unter the "Shrine" brand name. The following announcement appeared in the Feb. 16, 1918 edition of the United States Tobacco Journal:

"MANY, BLANC & CO. TO MAKE CIGARS.

Large Chicago Jobbers Buy Shrine Cigar Co. And Will Market Own Brands
.

CHICAGO, ILL., Tuesday.

Many, Blanc & Co., for years one of the foremost liquor and cigar importing and distributing houses in Chicago, are embarking in the cigar manufacturing business and will market the "Shrine" line of clear Havana goods INa variety of attractive sizes and packlngs, made under their own supervision.

The Shrine Cigar Co., figuring prominently in retail ranks here, has been absorbed by Many, Blanc & Co., Mr.Isaacson, the proprietor, joining the Messrs. Many, and Cane, of the wholesale house. as leaf buyer and general superintendent of a modern new cigar factory which is being fitted up in their extensive quarters. Many, Blanc & Co., are wholesalers of Julius Klorfein's "Garcia Grande" and the Gans Brothers' lines in this territory. It is expected, of course, that these accounts will be retained.

Members of the jobbing firm will leave shortly for Havana, Cuba, where they will procure future stocks of leaf tobacco for their new field of operations. Walter Eisenman, of F. Miranda & Co., negotiated a liberal supply of raw material from the well-known Havana house he represents, for the initial product under the "Shrine" label."

Tobacco sales apparently allowed the company to survive Prohibition, and in 1934 they registered the "Lauche" brand of Kummel, renewing the trademark in 1949. They were still in business in 1954.

The company used the brand names:
"Ethyl", "Mt. Vernon Club Pure Rye", "Old Crow", "Old Ethyl Bourbon", "Oversea", and "White Top."

1860 - distillers page v difficult to read, 1872 unreadable, 1873 much missing, 1875 partial no DR, 1900 missing, 1903 no Wine & Liquor, 1904 J-S is unreadable, 1909: Major street renumbering with relocation of the E/W divide, 1911: minimal listing, another street renumbering, 1912 is missing, 1914: half distillers missing, 1915 no street addresses for distillers, 1917 no distillers in the business database, but includes the Telephone directory listings, 1918 no distillers and based on telephone directory only. There is some confusion on the dates of the directory - there were 4 sets variously labeled 1916-1919 but there were multiple xing out and inaccuracies. 1917 is a good bet, 1918 could be later. 1918: 5 th Ave becomes Wells
