There are two glasses with logo's from both this hotel and the Spokane Hotel's Silver Grill in Spokane, WA. There was a branch of the Silver Grill in Tacoma: the exact connection between all three is unknown.
The Tacoma Hotel was an enormous and luxurious structure designed by Stanford White in the Tudor style. It first opened its doors to the public on August 8, 1884. It overlooked the harbor in Commencement Bay and was frequented by the rich and famous of the day.
The Hotel's mascot was an 800 lb bear named Jack. He had been raised from a cub by the Hotel staff and had been taught to perform tricks for the guests, including drinking beer from a mug held between his front paws. On March 17, 1893, Jack refused to return to his pen after one too many beers and headed outside, down South 9th towards Pacific Avenue. This was a busy street and he was soon was accosted by police Officer Kenna, who shot him twice. The animal was wounded but not killed and was taken back to the Hotel to recuperate. Being shot apparently awoke the bear's natural distrust of humans and his beer-drinking days were over: he put down some time later.
The Hotel operated until 1935, when it was destroyed by fire.
